[Japan] Portable wifi

A must-have when traveling, in my opinion. I’ve tried a couple of online companies, namely: Global Advanced Commnunications, Japan Wireless, and Wifi Rental Store. For my next trip, I rented from Kyushu Wifi, so I shall update this post after that.

Global Advanced Communications

Rented a device from them some years back. GAC is one of the top names mentioned online when trying to find information about renting wifi eggs, so this was the one that I tried first. Compared to the others I’ve tried, their rates are a little more pricey. For their most premium product, a 187.5 Mbps model with unlimited data*, four days start at 5,500 JPY, with an additional 450 JPY for each additional day following. Delivery is free, and they deliver to airports, so you can pick it up immediately after arriving in Japan.

My experience: Signing up for a rental online was easy. There was a bit of confusion, however, when it came to the emails about my wifi egg, which was solved pretty easily. I paid 7,450 JPY for 7 days (I picked the 75 Mbps option, which was a little cheaper). Using the wifi was easy, no issues with the speed or connection at all, though we only traveled around the greater Tokyo metropolitan area.

Japan Wireless

I think I’m beginning to see Japan Wireless being mentioned more often these days. It’s cheaper than GAC (see Japan Wireless rates here) with faster models, and it also comes with a free portable charger.

My experience: I rented a device for 15 days during a more extensive trip around Japan, going around Tokyo, Sendai, Nikko, Hakone, Kamakura, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima, etc. I don’t quite remember there being hiccups with speed, although I remember having to restart the device a couple times after not being able to connect. Not too bad, though.

Wifi Rental Store

I keep finding cheaper and cheaper rental companies, haha. Wifi Rental Store is, again, cheaper than the first two. Unlike the first two, however, they don’t advertise unlimited data*. They also have a monthly rate for rentals that are anywhere from 15-31 days.

My experience: I don’t quite remember how I found this one–it’s not as mentioned as the other two are. In any case, for my short three-day trip to Tokyo, I tried this one. 3,270 JPY for three days, not bad. No issues at all with using the device, communication via email was smooth (I had to sort out the delivery date to the airport as we were arriving in Haneda around 1 am).

Kyushu Wifi

Like Wifi Rental Store, Kyushu Wifi provides a monthly fixed price for long-term rentals. Unlike the previous rental company, however, renting through Kyushu Wifi is a little bit more complicated. While they have an English page, their order pages are a confusing mix of English in Japanese, so if you don’t know Japanese, it can be a little baffling. Second, they don’t deliver to airports, which is a little more inconvenient. They can deliver to hotels, however, so it’s still an option.

My experience: Renting was…a little more complicated, haha. Will update with actual details once the trip is over.

Unlimited data?

Subject to a fair usage policy, there really is no such thing as unlimited data. For the most part, speeds are usually slowed down when a certain cap is reached within a given amount of time, usually a month. Please contact the company you would like to rent a device from for details.
